Westminster Catawba Christian School believes that Christian education should be available to all families regardless of social or economic status. Financial assistance is available for families who want to provide Christian education for their children but are unable to meet their tuition expense. WCCS uses Family Financial Needs Assessment (FFNA), an independent organization, to determine need for assistance. FFNA accurately and confidentially evaluates the financial status of a family that may need help in paying tuition. FFNA does not award tuition assistance.  They independently assess need and report results back to WCCS. WCCS in turn uses this information to prioritize the distribution of tuition assistance and scholarship dollars. The WCCS financial assistance committee meets in April of each year to review assessment recommendations and make assistance awards for the following school year. Based on historical amounts available for distribution, the general rule of thumb is that tuition assistance awards range between 5% and 20% of the total tuition obligation.

If you wish to apply for assistance, please complete and submit an FFNA application no later than Friday, March 19, 2010, to be given consideration for a needs-based tuition assistance award through our Tuition Assistance Program. FFNA applications are available in both school offices. Please contact Sharon Roddey at 328-5475 if you have any questions about the application or our process.

One Heart, One Mind, One Purpose ... Philippians 2:2

Casting Our Anxiety on Him

Have you ever considered how diabolical anxiety is?  Anxiety is a remarkably deceptive emotion that calls upon us to invest large amounts of emotional energy and time in that which is absurd.  But why do we legitimize the employment of anxiety.  Perhaps, we assume that if we are demonstrably and consistently anxious, others will consider us more responsible or "concerned" for other people or situations around us.  However, 1 Peter 5 - 7 says, "Young men (and women), in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast ALL your anxiety on him because he cares for you."

If we peel back the face of anxiety we find a proud, unsurrendered, independent, and unsubmissive heart!  We may protest that others have come to know us as the "messianic anxious one" who is concerned about solving everyone's problems, but we are all under-qualified for this role.  All our frittering about does not answer the Lord's call to throw or place our cares, anxieties, burdens, and distractions on Him, because he cares for us.  Psalm 55:22 also encourages us to, "Cast your burden upon the LORD, and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken."  When we receive our Heavenly Father's loving care and grace for us, our hearts are humbled and surrendered, our wills become submissive and dependent to one worthy of carrying our concerns.

Corrie Ten Boom, concentration camp survivor, who wrote The Hiding Place, said, "Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow; it empties today of its strength." Matt. 6:25 reminds us, "For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?" The anxieties and worries of this temporal life only serve to rob us of the joys of the day and the peace that comes from trusting Jesus.  Corrie also said that, "If you look at the world, you'll be distressed. If you look within, you'll be depressed. If you look at God you'll be at rest."

The preschool program at Westminster Catawba Christian School is committed to providing a high-quality, developmentally appropriate program for children ages three and four in partnership with their parents.  Recognizing each child as a unique, valuable creation of God, our goal is to lay the foundation for later learning.  Teachers provide concrete experiences where children take in information using their senses as they manipulate objects and observe relationships in their environment.  Direct and indirect instruction is implemented in an integrated curriculum using concrete activities.  Believing all truth originates in God, the Bible is central to helping children develop their personality and learn about their world, as they are encouraged to reach their full potential in Him.

We will have a meeting for our junior high girl's soccer and golf teams immediately after school Wednesday, February 10, in the gym/stage area.  Prospective players and parents are welcome.

As a reminder, your athlete needs a current physical on file to participate in each sport.  If you are not sure when your child's physical expires, please contact Karla Jollie (328.5468 or kjollie@wccs.org).

We will recognize our winter sports seniors on Tuesday, February 9,  between the girl's and boy's varsity games.  Mark your calendars now, so family and friends can share this milestone in our student athletes lives.

Our junior varsity girl's basketball team will be hosting a tournament Saturday, February 13.  The tournament field includes Southlake Christian Academy, Hickory Grove, First Assembly, Covenant Day and WCCS.  Each team is guaranteed to play 2 games.  The format for this tournament is to shorten the quarters to six minutes and halftime to 7 minutes to give the girls playing time, experience and fellowship, but being mindful that shorter games under this format are best.  The first game tips off in the WCCS gym at 10 a.m., and the championship game is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.  Admission is $6 for adults and $2 for students.  Our concession stand will be open for the duration of the tournament as well.  We are still in need of volunteers, so if you feel led to help, please contact the athletic department at 803.328.5468 or kjollie@wcs.org.

Give Them Praise!

A mother and her 10 year old daughter were sitting in Wendy's enjoying a quick lunch.  Two young mothers walked in with two preschoolers in tow.  One of the women took the kids and started looking for a table, while her companion got in line.  One of the preschoolers immediately went into temper tantrum mode.  She wanted to get the napkins, she did not want that table...she wanted one in the back.  The young mother struggled between trying to please the child or forcing her to comply. The 10 year old leaned over to her mother and whispered.  "I know what you would do if I acted like that."  Her mom just smiled, and they continued enjoying their lunch. Things settled down as the preschoolers got their meal.  But it wasn't long until they were up and beginning to take over the place, like kids on a playground.  The young mothers sat and talked, oblivious or too exasperated to do anything about the ruckus.   As the temper-tantrum kiddo walked by, the 10 year-old's mother leaned over then winked at her and gave her a big smile. The little girl looked up, gave a small wave and smiled.  She then walked back to her seat and sat like a different child.  The 10 year old was shocked. She asked in a whisper, "Mom, why did you smile at that little girl? She's acting like a brat!"  Mom smiled and winked. "Sometimes kids need to be affirmed when they are behaving right or have met a responsibility, otherwise they may never know how."

Practice Praise!  We so often tell our children and penalize them for what they are not doing, what they should be doing, and we use the "Don't do's" far too often.  Try this week to catch your child doing it right.  Praise him for getting a problem right.  So often we say things like "Well, it's about time!" Instead, tell your child or student, "See I knew you would get it! You worked hard." Be very specific in your praise because we want to encourage the specific behavior to be repeated.  And be careful not to hold them to a higher standard than we hold ourselves.

In Ephesians, Paul tells us, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it might benefit those who listen."  Build up your children according to their needs.  Make a point to practice the art of praise.  Praise them for turned in homework, praise them for diligence in getting work done, praise them for not getting frustrated, and praise them for just being themselves.  They are valued by God.  Practice praise. Practice praise.  Practice praise.  And thank you for reading this all the way through...you did well!
