In light of the recent devastation in Haiti, I wanted to let you know of some ways to support the current relief efforts.  Keith Falde, beloved WCCS high school science teacher, was a missionary to Haiti for nine years, and his son is still actively involved in assisting ministries outside of Port Au Prince. If you would like to learn more about how you can assist in relief efforts through his son, please email Keith at kfalde@wccs.org. For other opportunities to give to Haiti, please click here:

Athletics - Steve Cross

With two sports seasons behind us and our spring sports about to kick off, we have lowered the cost of athletic passes.  An adult pass can be purchased for $30 and a student pass for $15.  Be mindful that admission to varsity games / matches is $5 for adults and $3 for students.  Junior High events are $3 for adults and $1 for students.  Per the guidelines of our conference, we cannot allow athletes in to athletic events free of charge.

If you have a young student driver and require a waiver to allow your child to attend practice and/or games past their legal driving time, please contact Karla Jollie (kjollie@wccs.org or 328-5468), and she will give you a letter on school letterhead to submit.

One Heart, One Mind, One Purpose ... Philippians 2:2

Gentleness and Inheritance

"Blessed are the gentle because they will inherit the earth" Matt. 5:5.  Notice that the earth was never designed to be conquered, divided, and subdued by violent rebels.  The earth has always been a gift to be cultivated, ruled, and subdued by loving disciples. Other translations refer to the meek inheriting the earth.  Meekness is not weakness and gentleness is not passivity.  To the contrary, the meek and gentle possess the quiet strength of character that receives loving kindness from God and extends the same to others.

Gentleness in the scripture is often associated with God's loving kindness or covenant keeping love.  For example, in 2 Samuel 22:36 David declares, "You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your gentleness has made me great." Psalm 18:35 adds, "You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your right hand has held me up, Your gentleness has made me great." David could have attributed his greatness to many things, but he highlights the Lord's gentleness as an expression of His loving kindness.

The scripture reminds us that there will be a day in which the redeemed will inherit a new heavens and new earth in which righteousness dwells, but as we wait in hope, we can reflect the glory of the Redeemer by living out the gentleness of assurance. Psalm 36:7 declares, "How excellent is thy loving kindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings."

Taxes, Taxes, Taxes...it's that time of year again. While some look forward to the refund check, others are astonished at what they still owe good-ole Uncle Sam. Having to compile our yearly information and then file the paper work can be a headache, but does keep us organized and accountable to what is owed to our country, but also to ourselves.  Without those yearly W2's, would some of us even know how much we made in a year?  Taxes are structured and have certain specific guidelines and codes for us to follow. Following these steps correctly, we pay the minimum or get a refund. But make a mistake, and we can pay way more than we originally expected.

Having access to much information relevant to Learning differences, we recently discovered some tax benefits available for parents of children with specific learning disabilities.  Wanting you to be informed of every advantage available to you, we are passing this information on to you. There is a website that will give you all the details:www.greatschools.net.  Search under 2008 Tax Benefits.  I also have a printed copy in my office for anyone who would like a hard copy of this information.

Sharing the information on this topic offers a good analogy for the frustration some of our children experience in their school work. Sometimes no matter how structured, organized or simple it appears to be to us, one wrong step or miscalculation can throw off the results. Like taxes, even with the extra help of computer programs or help from experts in the field, these accommodations can still cause us  undo frustration. However, without these helps many of us would be at a disadvantage with our taxes, as our children often are in their studies.  It is important to know and use the right resources.  Getting help is nothing to be ashamed of, instead, it is power. For us it could be the difference between writing a tax check and receiving one.  For our kids, it could be the difference of simply passing a test or understanding the material for a lifetime.

Jesus said to "Render what is Caesar's unto Caesar. Render what is God's unto God."  Our taxes may belong to Uncle Sam, but we belong to God.  Use all available resources as you prepare your taxes and encourage your students to take advantage of every available resource in their academic responsibilities and gain wisdom and power, and then give Him your best.
