STAR
Janice Carter

As we are in full swing for re-enrollment and the admissions process for new students, I thought it would be helpful to highlight the STAR services offered as you consider the needs of your children.

Most of you are aware that to receive STAR services for those who experience some learning challenges in the classroom it is a requirement to have a psycho-educational assessment that states a specific diagnosis such as, ADD, ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, Dsylexia or any other Specific Learning Disability.

The services available to meet the needs of these diagnoses are, Search and Teach  (S&T), Tutorial Study Hall (TSH), Resource, and NILD educational therapy (Discovery). The service recommended depends on the individual student's diagnosis and the severity of the deficits identified.  S&T is offered for 5K- 1st grade and is an early intervention to prevent learning failure. Resource is available for 1st-12th grades and offers assistance in understanding concepts in core subjects, additional time to practice and receive further instruction, and the implementation of accommodations to help students experience success in the classroom.  TSH is available for 4th -12th grades and is a class of  no more than 6 students who receive instruction in study skills, time management, organizational skills, assistance in understanding concepts and implementation of accommodations that cannot be met in the regular classroom. Discovery is offered to students in grades 2nd-12th; it is an intensive non-tutorial therapy that stimulates areas of cognition and perception that may not be working as efficiently as they could be. Although academic skills are addressed, it is not done in a tutorial way.  This intervention is the most comprehensive and creates brain change and lasting impact if the program is followed with disciplined intentionality. Admissions and re-enrollment may be contingent upon receiving one or more of these services.

I encourage you to go to the school website to glean more information about these services and the costs involved to utilize them.  If you have questions or concerns about the signs and symptoms your child may be demonstrating please email me at jcarter@wccs.org; I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you.

One Heart, One Mind, One Purpose ... Philippians 2:2

Examples and Warnings

"For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert.

Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: 'The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in pagan revelry.' We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did-and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. We should not test the Lord, as some of them did-and were killed by snakes. And do not grumble, as some of them did-and were killed by the destroying angel.

These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it" I Cor. 10:1-13.

Verse 13 is very popular because we are comforted to know that temptations are commonly shared, and God is faithful to provide ways of escape in the midst of those temptations.  However, do we heed the examples and warnings that keep us from the intensification of those temptations?  Idolatry and sexual sin are pretty straight forward, but how does grumbling magnify the temptation to sin?  At the core grumbling is a declaration that God is not faithful, and others are not to be trusted.  People complain about their jobs and then murmur that they are not promoted. Parents criticize their pastor and wonder why their children are cynical toward the church and don't want to serve the Lord.  Others gossip, backbite, and slander their friends and foes, perplexed as to why cannibalizing their relationships has left them depressed and lonely.  Perhaps heeding the examples and warnings from Israel's lessons will help us to not miss out on our own Canaan.

Because of Calvary, I'm free to choose.

And so I choose JOY . . . I will invite my God to be the God of circumstance.  I will refuse the temptation to be cynical . . .  the tool of the lazy thinker.  I will refuse to see people as anything less than human beings, created by God.  I will refuse to see any problem as anything less than an opportunity to see God.

(Max Lucado, Grace For the Moment)

Business Office - Bryan Martin

Westminster Catawba Christian School (WCCS) believes that Christian education should be available to all families regardless of social or economic status. Financial assistance is available for families who want to provide Christian education for their children but are unable to meet their tuition expense. WCCS uses Family Financial Needs Assessment (FFNA), an independent organization, to determine need for assistance. FFNA accurately and confidentially evaluates the financial status of a family that may need help in paying tuition. FFNA does not award tuition assistance, they independently assess need and report results back to WCCS. WCCS in turn uses this information to prioritize the distribution of tuition assistance and scholarship dollars.

If you wish to apply for financial assistance, applications are due to FFNA no later than Friday, March 19, 2010, to be given consideration for a needs-based tuition assistance award through our Tuition Assistance Program.  FFNA applications are available in both school offices.

The WCCS financial assistance committee meets in April of each year to review assessment recommendations and make assistance awards for the following school year. Based on historical amounts available for distribution, the general rule of thumb is that tuition assistance awards range between 5% and 20% of the total tuition obligation.

If you have questions regarding the reenrollment process or FFNA application process, please contact Sharon Roddey at 803-328-5475 or sroddey@wccs.org.
